How many exams to become MCSE?

and then How many to become MCP?

What's the time frame realistically to do both?

MCP is to pass one of Microsoft Exams = I'm currently doing my windows xp mcp exam, hopefully i would have completed in a month.. couple of hrs revision a night.

MCSE =
Best of visiting the above site, there area choice of electives to consider in taking this course.

I friend of mine is doing his MCSE, with 1 exam left (booked for october) he started in december last year.

In short, hwo much time have you got? and how much is your brain like a sponge

If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?

I just finished my BSc in Comp Studies, and can't decide which to do first(MCSE or CCNA), but most employers in the Caribbean ""SEEM"" to prefer MCSE/MCP over CCNA/CCNP, what is the best way for a broke student out of University to achieve the MCSE qualification?

Self Study Kit for 290,291,293,294 then the electives or have someone go through the courses in a class?

There are loads of self study options;
The mspress books are Ok;

The below are all very good and have live examples of what the instructor is talking about.

The only thing I would stay away from is cbtdirect, in my opinion it's nowhere as good as the above. Its basically text on the screen and some computer voice reading out what it says on screen.

The books are probably the cheapest way to go and then use something like measureup.com or the transcender tests to give you an idea of what the tests are like.

The one thing to remember when taking Microsoft exams is you have to think like Microsoft and how they would do it, not necessarily as you would in the real world.

Tumbrick,

I agree with pagy, although I've only used CBT Nuggtets and TestOut for training videos. Both are good, but I found CBT Nuggets to be better at covering all of the material on the exams.

Also worth mentioning, you'll need to set up a small network at home if you plan to do MCSE on your own. You'll need at least one server and one client, and as many as three servers to do some of the exercises in the MS-Press books. Nothing beats hands-on experience.

Another big diff between Microsoft testing and Cisco is you need to retake the cisco test every few years to maintain your certification. Where with microsoft once you've got it you've got it. The thing with microsoft is if you get you got your certification on windows NT server... you would want to upgrade your cert to windows 2003 server... but you would always have the nt server cert if you didnt want to upgrade. (Not the case with cisco)

The amount of time required to get an MCSE depends on the amount of real world experience that you have and the amount of time you can spend studing and how fast you get the concepts and ideas that are invoved.

Some people can pass all the exams with minimal studing in a couple of weeks. Some people can take the first exam 5+ times over 3 months and still not pass it. At that rate it could take a couple of years to pass all the exams.

Me personally I started my path towards MCSE a couple of years ago. But I got distracted with some other certs and life also got in the way. Although I did pick up several other certs since then I've got two left for MCSE.

I already have an MCSD, MCP with Visual Basic 6 from a few years ago. I passed the ASP.NET test recently for the MCSD C#.NET track. Am I supposed to get another MCP for the .NET or the MCP designation carries over?

I never received anything from Bill on this one.

I still have to pass 4 more tests to get the MCSD for C#.NET.

i think you can only get one mcp. i might be wrong??

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure whether there were MCP designations for specific technologies, as they have for MCSD, etc.

Just got my MCSA 2003, the 70 291 exam is nasty, XP and server environment weren't too bad.
