I just bought star wars galaxies and it wont play because it says direct 3d could not be correctly initalized and that my video card (riva tnt2 ultra)may not support hardware transform and lighting. Is there some software i can download to fix it or am i going to have to upgrade my video card?

Well, I am not sure about the error you are receiving, however the TNT2 series is getting extremely old. If you are on a limited budget and need a replacement card I would recommend a card I got for a second machine I have that used to have a TNT2 (Diamond v770) that just wasn't cutting it anymore.

The card I got was:

Chaintech GeForce4 MX440 128MB DDR

These are not the best gaming cards out there, but the fact that it has 128MB DDR is a good advantage and quite cost effective.

It's around $65 delivered and I am quite pleased with the price vs performance on my older AMD Thunderbird system.

Just a suggestion, but there are plenty of other solutions out there that are fairly affordable and at least will get you something a little newer.

One last thing you could try would be getting something like rivatuner or gtu (geforce tweak utility). They have all kinds of little tweaks and workarounds in there, but you have to read each setting carefully to make sure you don't damage your hardware.

Good luck on whatever path you choose...

Cheers!

The TNT2 cards do not have hardware transform and lighting, that came in with the first Radeon's and GeForce2's. I don't think a software routine was ever written into DirectX for a software solution.

Regards to the above post, I find 128meg completely pointless on a budget card. The only need for that memory is high resolution & FSAA, which if you're interesting in running those settings in a game, the GeForce MX line is not going to give you the frame rates to make the game enjoyable; the card is self-defeating in it's purpose.

But 128 is greater than 64 and makes people feel like they get their money's worth, thus they sell better.

FYI, a Chaintech FX5200 runs for the same price, offers better performance, and supports DirectX 9 through hardware.

Yeah, I am running EQ on it now and then at 1280x1024 and I can say it beats the pants off the old TNT2 *cackle*

Again, as I said there are plenty of solutions out there, I was only speaking for one that was affordable and does a decent job. I try to only attest to things I have personally tried or seen in action. *shrugs*

By no means do I pretend its the best solution available, but one that will probably not give older motherboards problems with voltage and still be better than what they have now.

In the end, he has to decide from himself...

Cheers!

Here was another link I came across for cheap video solutions:

GeForce4 MX440 64MB DDR 4x AGP Card w/Dual-Port VGA Card Only Only $36.55

or

ATI Radeon7500 64MB-DDR Dual Monitor AGP Video Card w/TV Out Only $39.99

These deals can be found at
Just thought I would pass that along because they were affordable deals that might get the job done for ya...

Good luck!
