I have a Tiny laptop and the mother board needs replacing. Will any motherboard be compatable? Or will it have to go back to them to fit their parts?

Notebooks [and laptops] have to go back to the manufacturer for replacing the motherboard, unless they have a service agent/center nearby that can replace it. The boards and the cases are made to fit together and the chances of finding a third-party board that will fit is slim.

Berton is very right in that you can not use any motherboard in the system. Also, most of the laptops that I have seen are not cost effective to replace the motherboard in.

In the PC shop that I worked in, however, we replaced quite a few (although in my opinion, none of the laptops were worth the $600 - $1500 (U.S.) that was generally spent to do it). The catch was that we were not always able to get the parts to do it, but sometimes we were able to get some boards that we didn't expect to find!

Although I expect that you will not end up fixing it, I would at least explore the option first--you might be pleasantly surprised! You might check around, just for grins and giggles to see how much $$ it would cost to have a replacement board installed (assuming the PC shop can even find the board). I would not let the shop charge for the estimate, though (many will try with a laptop). Just have them check for parts price and availability and give you a general price range for installation. You don't want to pay $50-$100 for a shop to open it, look at it, and say, "nope, can't fix it".

Also, be warned--if you are not sure that ONLY the motherboard is the problem, then it can get expensive, as many PC shops consider a laptop motherboard to be a 'special order' item--often they are non-refundable, or only refundable for a portion of what you paid originally.

Good luck! Mudskipper
