Timing out to Gateway

My work pc is having some issues that I can't figure out. When I log into the domain when I get there in the morning, my Internet connection does not work. I have all local connectivity, yet nothing external. I then tried to ping the gateway, and get a timeout response. After about 5 minutes I begin to get a response and then I have Internet access. If anytime during the day, I log out and log back in, I get the same results. The PC was set up on a DHCP like all the other workstations we have. I then tried to set it to static and enter the DNS manually, yet still the same issues.

Any clues? I've tried different NIC drivers also.

What OS are your using?

What OS are the others in your office using?

Do you have a DNS server in your office?

OS is Windows 2000 Pro
Server is Windows 2000 Server with Domain
DNS is of course in house since we run our own domain.

When you ping from your workstation, do you get timeouts?

When you ping a different PC or server do you get timeouts?

Also try to ping the gateway, at the same time as your PC, from a different PC and watch the results.

Use the Ping ###.###.###.### -t to watch the replies...

What I am getting at, is that it could be the nic itself, or the patch cable connecting the PC to the network.

I am thinking the same thing as hewissa.... A bad cable does funny things..... Also try a different port on the switch.

Well I have done the ping the gateway with the -t switch and typically after 5 minutes I can talk to it.

I thought it could be a cable or port also but I have tried different ones and am getting the same issue. I tried changing the NIC drivers to see if that is an issue but that did not fix it. Possible bad NIC? If so why the consistency of only when I log in and wait 5 minutes, then it works fine? And always the connection to the gateway only. All server or other PC's can be pinged with no issues.

If no other computer has this issues then that tends to lead me to a faulty NIC. Updating drivers won't correct a hardware failure. Yank the thing out and throw a new on in.

On a side note, could be also that the nic is conflicting with another piece of hardware. Have you moved/installed a new piece - vid/sound card? Or possibly update that hardare which my be conflicting.

What I would like to know is, once you boot imidiatly do an ipconfig /all and see what info is there. Maybe your computer is not retaining your DHCP lease and subsequent configs. Not sure if what I am asking for is clear...

It appears as though it is not just me. I can't lock down any sort of pattern to the issue. So far I have identified 10 PCs doing the same thing and they aren't all on the same switch. We have 5 switches and 4 of them have at least one of the PCs with the issue. Do you think that it might be an issue with the DHCP server that could be stopping access to the gateway? I have noticed that they DNS feed out to the DHCP clients has a few more than previously. The extra DNS address are all from our ISP though. Any thoughts?

Could be the gateway setting on the DHCP.

I must admit I am getting confused and I need you to tell me what you see. Are you the admin? Can you access the DHCP server? Check to see the router is configured properly under the Server Options. Also check under you scope options. Check to see if DNS is also configured there.

Did you do the ipconfig /all once the thing was up?

What did you mean by this statement? "I have noticed that they DNS feed out to the DHCP clients has a few more than previously. "
