we have t1. Upon picking up an external line from any handset is there a way to set the timeout before the system tries to dial the number. We need more time to enter a phone number. For instance, our system seems to dial the number after xz number of seconds and for 10 digit numbers it might dial after 7 didgits while the user is looking for the other digits on their unreadable scrap of paper.

Look under Dialing Plan there should be a Dial out timer in there that you can change.

the central office also will have to adjust the timers norstar (or any PBX) is only half the story

For MICS, the setting is:
System Programming/Dialing Plan/Dial Timeout
then press Change.
You can select 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, or 15 seconds.
(Requires installer password.)

I set ours to 8 seconds (4 is the default) and no one has complained since. The only disadvantage to the longer time is that international calls take a long time to connect, and for those, the user can press # to tell the Nortel they're done dialing and it immediately completes the call.

For all other types of calls the Nortel already knows how many digits are required and completes the call as soon as the user has dialed enough digits, provided your Public dialing plan is set up correctly.
