Timeout Problem

I am creating a report on a very large database using CR 8.5. The problem is that Crystal Reports seems to 'hang' if a table has a large amount of data. Does anyone know how to increase the timeout so that CR has enough time to retrieve the data? I seem to remember doing something similar in an older version while creating a parameter list by changing a registry entry.

Did you ever find a solution to this post? I am having the same problem.

Is it CR or the database that is hanging? I have run reports off SQL and Oracle that run for several hours and cycle through over a million records returning 14,000+ pages.

Crystal Enterprise on the other hand does have a potential timeout limitation.

I do not know of any setting to increase a timeout since the designer does not maintain a timed state. It will request data and present it when it has been gathered.

When CR hangs, check the Task Manager and see what yout resource (CPU etc.) usage is. If the %is quite low, then the issue is likely elsewhere.

If this is a large table. Is it popular with other processes and is the database busy when running the roport.

Does the database have a conenction threashold?

Just some thoughts

When I first got CR 8.5, I had this problem and from the free support i received from CR, they had me go into the registry and change the Browse Timeout value in HKEY_CURRENT_USER in one of it's subdirectories. Now I can't find it anymore. Support for CR 8.5 is $395 for 5 calls. Pretty expensive but I may have to use it if I can't find out how to increase the Timeout.

I must thank you WaltS

I was not aware of this, but you got me thinking and checking.

NOTE: What I am about to tell you I can not be held responsible for. If your machine blows up, runs away, simply stops working or anything else bizzare that might happen from modifying the registry.

As alway back up the registry before you modify unless you are comfortable not doing it.

------------

You should be able to adjust the setting here --

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Seagate Software\Crystal Reports\DatabaseServer | BrowseTimeout

Change the value from 5 to whatever you need to run the report.

Let's see...that'll be...FREE [thumbsup]

Thank you again. The problem is, I can't find that where it used to be. I am missing some of those registry entries. I knew I was on the right track but now I must call them. Maybe they can tell me where it went. You have been quite helpful though.

Seems a bit unusual to be 'missing'. Are you sure you are looking in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER and not LOCAL_MACHINE?

Have you tried re-installing CR?

There is also a way you can run a re-install to force all the reg keys and files to be updated. It uses the Windows installer command line switches as follows

C:\msiexec /faum X:\scrdev.msi

Replace X with the appropriate drive letter.

-------
Legend:

f- Repairs a product. This option ignores any property values entered on the command line.

a - Force all files to be reinstalled.

u - Rewrite all required user-specific registry entries.

m - Rewrite all required computer-specific registry entries.
-------

Hopefully this does it for ya.

I am sorry to say that it did not put it under the area you had mentioned HKEY_CURRENT_USER. I am at a loss. So is Crystal Reports

Not sure what to say. Seems pretty odd. I have tried with a couple of clean installs and it works. If you want, send an email using our feedback form and I will get you something to try.
