We are currently experiencing a problem where we could hear ticking sound coming off from an IPE shelf. There are 8 analog cards on this shelf and 7 digital cards. We are already replaced the power supply and the ring generator. When the ring generator was replaced,a smoke came out of the card. Right now, only the power supply and the analog/digtal cards are installed and we continue to hear the ticking sound. Phones on this shelf are working except that there is no ringing on the analog phones.Any ideas to what is causing this problem.

Appreciate your urgent help.

Thanks.

Sounds like one of the analog line cards may be bad. Try unplugging all the analog line cards and see if the noise is still there. If you saw smoke come out of the Ring Gen when you replaced it, it may be bad as well. After unseating all the analog line cards. Power off the the ring gen. and let it set for approx. 5 minutes. Then reseat power supply and power it back up. Plug in 1 analog line card and test to see if phone rings. If it does then seat 1 card at a time and test after every card. Good luck.

the ring gen is still bad or the ipe has a bad backplane, eitherway, it's a hardware problem

Replaced the ring generator and it shorted the card again. Checked the backplane but there was no indication of a short. Other suggestions ?

still making noise?.. you've only got the other power supply to look at, you may not be able to see a fracture in a solder joint, i've had backplane problems that were not visible, but not on this switch.. you do know that ana trunk cards can click on out dial?

We have had ticking from analogue cards - turned out to be nothing more than the relay reversing the line polarity for message waiting lamp on analogue sets.

It could also be the controller card. I have seen it happen before. Try disabling the controller card and reseating it.

We already moved all the analog cards to a different shelf because of short in the ring generator card slot. We are scheduled to replace the backplane. Thank you all for your help.
