I am in NO way familiar with Thunderbird so the following could very well be wrong, but I did find the following via a Google Search
Thunderbird does not support or use ActiveX.
If what they say is true, automation of it would not be very likely.

JRB-Bldr is right. Thunderbird can't be used as an Automation client. One reason is that it is not Windows-specific. The product also exists for other operating systems.
You can, however, use ShellExecute() to open the Thunderbird "New message" windows, just as you can with Outlook Express.
The preferred way to control Thunderbird programmatically is through JavaScript. TB is a very open architecture, and supports several ways of extending it. There's lots of information on the Mozilla site about this.
