Thunderbird 1.5 gets relay error with Gw 7.0

I have a sub contractor that decided to use GroupWise web access only. This is working great except for their admin.
He insists on using thunderbird 1.5.
The problem comes in when he tries to send mail. His out going smtp server is set to the GW server, but he gets a relay error when sending mail outside the domain.
Any ideas?

That's working as designed, it's a security implementation that prevents your system from being used as an open relay.

If you set up Thunderbird so that it requires Authentication to the SMTP service (running on GWIA), it should work. It will allow authenticated users to relay, but not unauthenticated users.
