We have several PDF files that have thumbnails and bookmarks, that we can see in Acrobat Reader. However when we open the same files in Acrobat 5, the thumbnails are always hidden. When we click to try to expand them nothing happens.
We tried reinstalling Acrobat 5, which didn't make a difference. We are wondering how we may get the bookmarks available, since it is very useful for large documents, and we would like to create our own bookmarks.

If you can edit the docs, go to File->Document Properties->Open options and select Bookmarks and Page in the initial view section. If this isn't what you meant or doesn't work then I'm at a loss. Ahhhhh, I see you have a machine that goes Bing!

I was able to go into document properties, "open options", and noticed it could toggle between displaying bookmarks, thumbnails, or none. Changing that setting however had no effect. We are still puzzled by the problem because we can see the tab for bookmarks on the left side, but it is not active. And Acrobat Reader displays the bookmarks without a problem!

I am at a loss - does this affect all files in acrobat? Do the thumbnails and bookmarks work in the Acrobat help files? Without knowing for sure, it sound like some sort of non-compliance issue between the file format and your version of acrobat - which version of reader are you using? It may help if you could post an example of one of the problem files. Ahhhhh, I see you have a machine that goes Bing!

After playing with a lot of settings, I found the bookmarks were permanently covered up by the document window, and it wouldn't let you click-drag the double bar next to the tabs on the left, in order to uncover the bookmarks. Instead, I was able to click and drag the bookmark tab on to the document window. It then formed a dialog box, and then we could see the bookmarks, etc.

I found that out by choosing full screen view, and noticing the thumbnails and bookmarks were visible, in text boxes.

Interestingly in Acrobat Reader, it does let you click and drag the double bar on the left of the document window, in order to view the tabs.
