Thumbnail Location question

I have just copied a whole load of pics from my camera to my laptop and overwritten files with the same name on my pc .

the thumbnails in my pictures are the old photos but when i click on them the new ones (that i copied over ) load.

so i guess the thumbnails are stored somewhere and i was wondering if i could get to them.

All I can think of is a screen capture that can be found in the likes of Paint Shop Pro, to capture the part of your screen that displays the thumbnail.

I think if you have overwritten the old files, that they are gone. Unless maybe an undelete type of program may be of some help. maybe?
