Does the thread count in task Manager actually represent a valid count of Threads? If threads may represent an overall average or an instantenous count what does the count in Task manager represent?

Given an application that shows up in the task manager say CSRSS.exe showing a thread count of 11. Is it an accurate count?

Any insight appreciated.

There are a variety of utilities available from that you can use to cross-check these figures.

Csrss.exe will appear many times, and be spawned many times by different processes because of the way it behaves. This is the user-mode portion of the Win32 subsystem (with Win32.sys being the kernel-mode portion). Csrss stands for client/server run-time subsystem and is an essential subsystem that must be running at all times. Csrss is responsible for console windows, creating and/or deleting threads, and some parts of the 16-bit virtual MS-DOS environment.

I hope this helps
