This relates to a Windows ME issue but this seemed to be the closest thread. I have been using a
Sony laptop with Windows ME for many years without problem.

In the past week it has been failing to start-up properly. Everything just freezes and
there is no error message. It does allow entry to Safe Mode but this doesn't help.

forum748 is for ME issues, but you have not given much to go on. What have you tried? First thing I would ask is if you are using a laptop that came with Windows ME on it, parts do fail, have you tested the hard drive doing the long test in drive fitness tools? When was the last time the system was reloaded? have you tested memory using memtest 386? When was the last time the fan and heatsink were cleaned, and new thermal paste installed? Since this a long dead OS and has not had any updates for years, Sometimes buying a new or used laptop is more cost effective.
