Honestly, I counted 6 the first go, and very easily... in one reading about 8 seconds I'd guess...
Strage that.

I got 6 too but I did read it twice to double check...

I got 6 as well although this is not the first time I have seen this test.

If I'm being honest, I didn't get 6 the very first time I did the test.

Has it really come to this? Copying and pasting emails into the thread?

I caught the first "OF" but missed the second two. Strange.

The brain cannot process "OF".
That is an unsatisfactory answer. What is that supposed to mean, anyway? Obviously the mind can "process 'OF'": we all say it and know what it means, so clearly our minds process it.

I found this explanation on Scientific American Mind's webpage:
[ul][li][Most people] ... usually detect only three--they don't see the F's in the three "of's," because "of" is a word that occurs at high frequency so it is not processed as a string of letters but as a unit.[/li][/ul]

Interesting.

PS - I don't really think the number of F's counted is directly proportional to your intelligence.

Hi,
a common proofreading trick is to scan the text backwards
one letter or word at a time..That way any context related issues are minimized and the word frequency does not matter..Many proofreaders use a ruler or other masking device to prevent them from actually 'reading' instead of 'proofing'

However, this only is effective for spelling and other typographic issues as it will not reveal syntactical or grammatical errors.

To Paraphrase:"The Help you get is proportional to the Help you give.."

Another contributing factor that I've heard to the reason people miss the 'f' in 'of' is because in that word, the 'f' sounds like a 'v', not an 'f'.

As a circle of light increases so does the circumference of darkness around it. - Albert Einstein

The original question was count every " F" (space F), so I looked for that, only saw 1. But yeas the 6 thing is very odd.

anotherhiggins,
I did not mean to upset anyone. This 'trick' made big impression on me so I decided to share. Is this considered offence? Then I do apologize.
But seing how many people busy with this subject I am de-apologizing. It is fun, isn't it?

And no, counting Fs does not prove you are not intelligent -
it is simply fishing out human genius. There are tests like this one and many others and no one gets upset over taking it. And I am a girl btw:)

Athenor one is the altibiy to raed tihs eevn wehn all the slpelnig is worng. Sniemothg aobut the mndis altibiy to pcik up jsut the lsat two lteters of a wrod and atuomtiaclly iprentret the wrod.

The way this was first presented to me was:
1)someone showed me the phrase,
2)had me read it aloud twice,
3)then they hid the phrase,
4)and finally asked me to count the f's in the phrase.

It makes it harder to correctly count them because, as described above, the f's in of sound like v's.

Try it that what on somone as see what happens. :)

CrystaLv:
It's likely not the subject. It's probably the fact that you posted, verbatim, a piece of e-mail flotsam that's been floating around the internet for years.

Im sorry for ASSuming you were a male. I thought before that you posted you were a male and Crystalv was the computer app or something, but I believe I have you confused with another tek-tiper!

My deepest apologizes ma'am :)

I had seen it before, so I didn't bother.

sbudzynski :)

I haven't seen this one before, I do not get many emails.
But if it is floating for a years it is probably means it is good time-passing game. I am still amazed! Now I read it and OFs jumps out in my face. Why and how didn't I see it?

It's like one of those "silent" letters.

Like the "P" in Shower.
