Just tried opening my Outlook. Got the error message: Outlook could not open the file containing the folders used to send and receive email messages, create appointments... Then it gives the option to create a new personal folders file or open an existing personal folders file.

Isn't there some way I can retrieve all of my data without having to rely on the backup I performed 1 month ago! Where is Outlook data stored anyway? I can't find it to save my life!

Honestly, I was going to backup again this week! dumb dumb dumb.

Anyway, a month of email lost is a HUGE deal.

Thanks.

Hi, michelle7

I'm no pukespert, but I'm pretty sure anyone who might help you will need to know:

What version of Outlook?
What operating system, exactly (Win XP Pro, Win 2K etc)?
Are you sure you used your normal login?

In most systems the .PST file is in a hidden folder, so to find it you have to configure explorer to show hidden and system files, then do a search for *.PST. You are looking for OUTLOOK.PST, most likely. If you find it they try telling Outlook to open the one you find.

Under XP it is usually in c:\documents and settings\user\local settings\application data\microsoft\outlook.

Check the recycle bin to see if it got deleted somehow.

Generally a message like this means that Outlook can't find (or use) the .pst file that JockMullin has told you how to find. Using the find or search function in windows to search for *.pst will probably turn up more than 1 .pst file. Usually there is archive.pst witch contains older, auto-archived messages & the current working outlook.pst

Depending on the environment that you're in, it's possible that this file is stored on a network server that you have lost access to for some reason. Is everything else working as it normally would?
