I am looking at setting up an office with a main Linux server and a few remote pc's (either thin clients or old units). I have played with XDMCP in the past to allow remote graphical logins to the host pc with some success. However, when I do this I must go to the server to insert a CD or any other removable media.

Is there a way to login through XDMCP (or a similar type login procedure) while allowing the host system to see the usb and cd rom drives on the remote pc. I would like to be able to read a flash drive from and play audio through the client pc while running the processes and programs on the server.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

share your flash drives or removal medias on your windows boxes and use samba on the linux server to acces it.

The thin clients will either be running linux (with a hard drive) or preferrably not have any hard drive at all (just running some limited linux off flash memory). I'm not sure if the share setup would still work in that case. I would like the server to recognize that user as having the local devices available (and not any of the other thin client's periphials). Any thoughts?

Have you looked at LTSP?

It addresses your issue by default.
