Themes Service is not Running

After a few problems, my computer booted up into Windows and I found that my Windows XP theme had disappeared and was replaced by the classic style.

When I click on the Luna file in Windows/Resources/Themes,
it tells me that the Themes service is not running.

But in services, it is on Automatic and has already started.

However, when I try to stop the service, it times out and produces an error.

So the root cause is down to running the actual service.

What can I do to make this service run properly again.

I tried to do and XP Repair with the CD but when I click on Enter at the first prompt, it says that it can't detect my hard disks (which are SATA).

What can I do to fix this?

WK

To load any Sata drivers you may have to press F6 shortly after booting from the XP CD.

You could try running the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

SC is a command that can be used to check out Services, for details and Syntax type SC in the Help and Support program.
"Communicates with the Service Controller and installed services. SC.exe retrieves and sets control information about services."

Are there any clues in your Event Viewer?

Well, Its worked out now after I managed to get the XP Repaired via the CD but now, although I can load the Win XP theme, it will revert to the classic style straight after a reboot.

How can I keep it on the Win XP theme?

Secondly, my Wireless Network Card is not connecting to the router anymore even though I've reinstalled teh whole thing.
Any suggestions on this?

Thanks
WK

Is your selection in Display Properties correct?

Is Group Policy coming into play?

Have a look at policies for Active Desktop and Classic Shell.

"If the "Turn on Classic Shell" setting (in User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer) is enabled, Active Desktop is disabled."

Thanks Linney, I managed to sort out the Wireless Networking Issue with a new Driver.

I haven't dabbled in Group Policies before. How do I access it? Where do I go?

WK

Assuming you are running XP Pro, you type Gpedit.msc in the Start Run box. Also assuming this is a standalone machine and not networked, it doesn't sound like a Group Policy issue if you have never been in there.

It may be corruption in the Registry or a corrupt user profile?

Have you tried another user?

Error Message: Windows Cannot Load Your Profile Because It May Be Corrupted (Q318011)

It probably is registry corruption.

The other 2 accounts on my PC work fine. I am the administrator but my Win XP theme is not showing up on reboot.

I found some registry settings from teh net which I copied into Notepad and saved as themefix.reg but when I click on it, it tells me that its not a registry script and that I can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.

What do I do next?

btw, my Active Desktop is working too.

JH

Does this reg file (when viewed in Notepad) have a top line (heading) of "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" without the quotes, before and above the guts of the reg file details?

Why don't you post the link where you found this information, it might be useful for others with a similar problem?

No, it doesn't have that. What should I do?

here is the 2 files I found.

Here is an example of what a reg file (unrelated) should look like in Notepad.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Current]
"Color Schemes"="Windows Standard"

Just save the file you have in Notepad, save it as a .reg extension, not .txt, make sure you have that heading in the file.

ok, I did that and it worked with the first file but the 2nd file popped a box saying that "not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes."

How do I run the reg file with none of its components running in the background?

JH

Here's 4 choices just off the top of my head.

Ignore the message, reboot and see what happens?

Try Safe Mode.

Check any access permissions on the reg keys you are amending.

Enter the missing entries manually.

Permissions problems could be the cause of your original problems as well as your current registry error.

How To Reset Security Settings Back to the Defaults

Have a look at the SubinAcl tool mentioned in this thread

Not Getting a "Save As" dialog
thread779-962708

I have just returned from Safe Mode where, when I clicked on the reg file, it said "Error Accessing Registry".

After that, I booted back into Windows normally and the theme still reverts to Classic.

How do I check access permissions on the reg keys?

The manual process is a bit over my head as it contains hex values and yet my regsitry contains a path we can read within the regsitry.

I'll have a look at that article now,

JH

Permissions are covered in the Help file of RegEdit as an article. Basically you just right-click on a Key and access Permissions via the drop down menu.

Viewing and Manipulating the Registry

If you experimenting in the Registry, I hope you have backed up any keys before you changed them. See Import and Export in the RegEdit Help.

This is a good program to get hold of if you playing with the Registry.

Registry Backup and Restore for Windows NT/2000/2003/XP

This is a free Hex Editor.

Hex-editor XVI32

Talking of backups, I hope you have also backed up any valuable data in case the worse happens?

You could look at BartPE and the loading of Registry Hives (to work on them while in another operating system).

The same might be possible with a parallel install of XP.

As an Administrator highlight one of the two following Keys, it will only be available for these Keys.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
HKEY_USERS

These two articles in the RegEdit Help are a good explanation of the process.

To load a hive into the registry
To unload a hive from the registry

The problem is, I've located 2 lines which are different from the values above and my own registry but when I try to change them or add another value, it tells me I'm not allowed.

How am I suppose to get around that?

WK

What is the exact error message?

What Service Pack level is this machine? What Service Pack level was the Reg file copied from?

HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP (Q308421)

Did you follow the links for amending the Registry, out of and away, from the current operating system environment, by using another operating system and loading the specific hives from you faulty operating system , you wish to amend, into that second operating system?

I admire your persistence, but you probably could have fixed this with creating a new profile as originally suggested at the beginning of the thread.

You can still get back to before you altered your Registry by using System Restore, if you want to?

There is even format and re-install to consider as a final solution after backing up all your data?

Anyway on the positive side, it is a good learning experience, if you see it like that, rather than a frustrating piece of gobbledygook?

You may even decide you like the Classic View, in fact I still use it myself as it not such a drain on resources.

Thanks Linney,

I found the reg file on the Internet but I don't know if it was from a SP2 or SP1 machine. I myself have SP1 and I've chosen to stay that way because of compatability problems.

I checked the registry values manually and went through each one.

Only on the last 2 entries:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_THEMES\0000]

"ConfigFlags"=dword:00000000 <- This one says 000000020 (32) on mine and I tried to change it but can't. It reverts back to 20.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_THEMES\0000\Control]
"*NewlyCreated*"=dword:00000000 <-- I tried to create this but wasn't given permission.
"ActiveService"="Themes"

I don't know why it wont allow me to edit the registry. I am the administrator.

I tried system restore to 3 different points but it failed every time.

I really can't be asked to format and reinstall as I have a heck of a lot of programs and files which take ages.

I like the XP Theme as I've been using it for a long time.

Now,

1) how do I edit the registry and by pass its protection?
2) How do I change/create new User Profile? What will happen if I do this? What will change? I've never done this before.

Thanks again,

JH

1) how do I edit the registry and by pass its protection?"

What don't you understand exactly, I have referenced several permission articles and links throughout this thread?

How To Use the Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Registry Editor Features

HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP (Q308421)

The above is also available for Registry Keys, also look at the Inheritance (coming from above) from the beginning of the Hive in question.

"2) How do I change/create new User Profile?"

How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile

"What will happen if I do this? What will change?"

Assuming your other usersnames are still not having problems after the registry amendments, this freshly created user should not have problems either? Hopefully you will copy all the data from the old user to the new user, but not the corruption, as long as you leave out copying the 3 recommended files mentioned in the article that should not be copied. You may have to fine tune your settings for Displays, Themes, etc. to get this new user to look the same as your old corrupted user before the corruption got into it .
