It should come as no surprise that the word of today is quadrennial.

[shocked] OK, so I am surprised.

In many places in the U.S. and Canada, February 29th is known as Sadie Hawkins Day upon which the girls get to invite the beau of their choice out to an event. In some localities, Sadie Hawkins Day is a holiday, with community picnics, old-fashioned carnivals, dances, and other activities.

Thank you Santa, I just was always semi curious, not enough to research, why it was called that or that it had any purpose. Now I must wiki!

We had Sadie Hawkins Day every year when I was in High School. One of the schools in my area still has it each year. I think it originated in Al Capp's comic strip Lil Abner.

I keep trying to do something about my procrastination but I keep putting it off until tomorrow.

Kinda cold for a picnic in Canada isn't it?

I think it originated in Al Capp's comic strip Lil Abner.
Yep!

Correct, TC. When Al Capp created the concept, it was annually (in November), but other communities chose February 29 to create some form of "justification" for the choice of day (and to not "wear out" the day from over use).

Back in "the day" (when Capp created the concept in his comic strip), it was unheard of for a female to invite a male out on a date. Nowdays, Sadie Hawkins Day is more of a reason to have a party on Leap Year, since females inviting males out on dates is no big deal.

CC,

Please forgive my getting us "into the (Dog Patch) weeds" with my "Sadie Hawkins" reference.

Santa,

I do remember our Sadie Hawkins dance in the fall. I checked with the local school. They still have the dance but it is no longer called Sadie Hawkins dance. It's called "backwards day". They change up the entire day. A.M. classes meet in the P.M., etc.

Now, back to the topic of quadrennial...

I keep trying to do something about my procrastination but I keep putting it off until tomorrow.
