I downloaded from the HP website the update for my BIOS (I just bought a new video card, and I think it is hanging up in the old BIOS), but when I try to run the update, I first get a message saying that the BIOS cannot run with memory managers running. When I create a boot disk to run without the memory managers, I get a message saying that the BIOS is the wrong version. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
dscands

It has to be installed from a command prompt (true DOS)from a floppy. Sounds like you downloaded the wrong version for your motherboard.
Did you disable onboard graphics when you installed the video card? I installed one in an HP that could only be disabled in device manager in Windows. It was a pain to disable. Jim

Please come back and let us know if your
problem is fixed and what fixed it!! [thumbsup2]

dscands,
You have just had a lucky escape.

Not all bios updates check the that it is the right version - though more are doing so these days.

It is to be emphasised that flashing the bios with the wrong version will corrupt your machine - it will no longer run and you end up having to change the motherboard.

If you are certain it is the right version but it is saying that it isn't you need to get in touch with HP. It may be their fault.

But, having said that. what is the setting you think the bios update will improve to allow you to get the best out of the graphics card - And, are you sure that whatever answer you are looking for is included in the version of the bios you are trying to install?

Regards.
It not what you say but how you say it that counts...apparently.

It looks like your problem isn't bios related anyway. Have another look at your other post: thread749-438216

In order:
ANFP - I may have downloaded the wrong version, but HP is pretty good about giving you the right downloads for the right machine. I was able to go through their support website and specify which computer I have, and it gave the BIOS update that I downloaded. What did you mean when you said "It has to be installed from a command prompt (true DOS)from a floppy"? I went through the "Restart in MS-DOS" option on Windows 98. Is there another option, other than restarting with a boot disk, for getting to DOS, that I am missing? And, yes, I used the directions on HP's website for disabling the on-board graphics, and it still won't run.

Win98User - The HP website said that this new version of BIOS improves the VGA BIOS, which I was hoping would improve my chances that the video card would be able to "speak" to the mobo. Here's the website that shows what the update does: That being said, I don't know specifically that the update will eliminate all my problems. I do know that the games I own will not work without a 3D card (another that I owned and installed fried on me), so I want to put a new one in.

Smah - thanks for the advice. I replied to your post on the other thread.

I just did some more research on HP's site, and there is an older BIOS update that is on the website, that also deals with the video options. I am going to download it and attempt to install it.

Smah - I just went through the instructions on the page you directed me to. Hopefully it will work!

Thanks.
