The Twinkies Password 2

That's not funny!

We're up to 12 character passwords at my work already. AND they MUST include Upper case, Lower case, Numbers, and at least 2 special characters.

Now as a sysadmin on multiple linux clusters I must remember these fun and exciting passwords for not only myself but for root, admin, routers, switches, etc. etc.

Oh, and we MUST change them every 3 months or whenever another person goes screaming off for another job somewhere else. Let us not forget that there can be no repeating of passwords, we can only change a password at most once a day. And no cheating by writing them down.

Kill me know. Someone. PLEASE!

I've always used bodily fluids of animals just to make things harder to guess, but 2 special characters makes it tougher. I'd use things like "DogVomit4Profit" but now it would have to be "100%DogVomit4Fun&Profit".

I think that these tougher password restrictions are starting to have the opposite effect on me - now I HAVE to write down my passwords so I can keep then straight! So, how am I increasing security when I'm forced to write my passwords on paper?

I have so many passwords that I got a password keeper. It's a program that encrypts all my password in a small table. That way I only have to remember the password to the program. I also have to make certain that I keep a goot backup of the program and its table.

But doesn't that just mean someone only needs to break one password, instead of several?

They would still have to get into my computer before they could crack the program. The decision is which is safer, having several pieces of paper lying around or an encrypted program? Nothing will be 100% safe.

That's true. Simply remembering the passwords would be best; but as you say, there are so very many to recall!
