The total number of locks exceeds the lock table size

I have a quite large table (about 70 mln rows, MySQL 5.0.18 on a linux box) and when i try to delete some records from it I started getting this message:

#HY000The total number of locks exceeds the lock table size

what should i do ?

InnoDB stores row locks in the buffer pool. Did you configure the buffer pool bigger than the default 8 MB?
