The spring theme mystery...changing a background

I am using FP 2003. I would like to modify the background of the "Spring" theme. The spring background is unusual in that the image only displays across the top of the page as opposed to tiling the image completely throughout the page. That being said, using the theme editing tool defaults to tiling the image. I thought I could simply replace the gif manually with a similar gif...but that has not worked either. The gif in question is background_spring.gif. I have created a new gif that is using an 8bit color palette, and is 128 x 128 pixels as far as I can tell, the image is the same as the original accept that I have changed the color.

Any thoughts?
