and I would like to share it with all of you. I don't want to see anybody run into the same problem.
Let me explain the environment and then the solution.
We have just starting bringing up a new MetaFrame XPe environment. On one site we have 3 servers up and running. Everything was going great! Then we deicided to take the environment to the next level. We crossed domains to a remote site across the WAN. So now we walked the other site through how to set it up and things were going... just ok. We ran into some issue right off the bat with setting up the ODBC connection. Well in the end once they were up things were kinda funky.
From their site when they loaded the management console they would get an error saying it could not contact the farm metric servers. But it could now see all 4 servers in the list. If they clicked on their server things looked fine. But if they clicked on a server at our site, it would error.
At our site if we clicked on our 3 servers everything looked fine. But when we clicked on theirs, it would error.
So our conclusion was the servers could see the SQL datastore. But they were not able to communicate with each other. So we called Citrix and opened a case. First thing they asked of course... are any ports blocked across the VPN. Our answer, "Nope, 100% open between us." Citrix, "Maybe it is licenses?" So they had is a utility to delete all the licenses. Yeah... that was not it! (and I am sure you all know the pain it is to activate the licenses)
NOW MY SOLUTION:
Sorry you had to read all this to get to here. I have one word...... WINS Yep, that was it. WINS. We figured this out on our own. Citrix did not help us. We put each of the servers in each others LMHOSTS file. Now everything works like a charm. I still have to activate all the damn licenses again, but other then that everything of golden!
Why are they still using WINS. Is my question? this is rediculas. Howcome everytime name resolution is an issue but you know DNS is working fine. It looks like conectivity, but NOPE it is WINS. (you would like I would learn by now, to skip the support and check WINS, I will from now on!)
Goodluck everybody
