My newer Lenovo laptop is being repaired, so I dragged out my Lenovo T61, my older previous laptop, which was my prime machine about 18 months ago. Bsck then I had a good running copy of win 7 pro and the machine served me well. Shortly after I started using it again a few weeks ago I discovered the following problems. I makes me consider reinstalling win7allover again.
1. Windows update will not run I get the error 1079 - The account specified for the service is different from the specified for other services running in the same process. I have tried running with "Local Service" and"local Application" without success
2. About two weeks ago the Outlook 2007 mail program - which I have used for years, stopped opening image downloads.
3. I had restore points that were over a year old - when I was previously running this computer as my prime machine. Somehow the Win 7 automatic Restore function kicked in and erased old restore points and now restore points are automatically replaced with my oldest being Aug 9. Previously I had NEVER set up restore points to be automatically replaced and thought I might actually restore to an old prior year point when the above problems occurred - which I discovered to my dismay.
4. My internal OEM Hitachi CD/DVD driver is disabled andI cannot reenable it. I never had a problem with this before. It was working up to a week or two ago.

Any ideas?

PS - the AV program is current and detected no problems today.

Also - I am getting these popups that questions whether my Genuine Windows is really genuine. I assure you it is.

Question about the Windows installation...

Did this copy of Win 7 Pro come with the laptop, was it installed under a volume license (business), or do you own a retail copy?

I had another T61 that I installed it in to replace XP which developed a bad mobo. So I bought a used T61 on the internet and swapped HDD putting the HDD with the retail version into the newly acquired T61 - this one. Up until a few weeks ago I never got these validation msgs, and my System page includes the symbol genuine windows.

It's strange that you said the Windows has been in use for a while after swapping the hard drive between machines and you never got a "not genuine" message until now. I would definitely do a fresh install of the OS just because it should fix all your problems. Where did you get the retail disc? Wondering if it was a bootleg and Microsoft has just caught up with the COA and jsut flagged it.

You can test the DVD drive by using a bootable disk if you can get one or have one.

I have been a registered student in a multi-year university night program. One of the benefits to students is that MS Corp arranges with many universities and colleges for students to order a MS software product disk and/or download with key directly from a website run by MS. It does not get more Genuine than that.

OK, so it's a legit copy of Windows that isn't being used on more than one device. So for some reason, it's behaving as if it's needs to be revalidated. See this article for some ideas:

Alternatively, you can also go ahead and follow the steps to activate Windows. It won't go through automatically, most likely, but you can call Microsoft with your valid key in hand, and they should be able to give you a valid code to make it genuine again. If that fails, and the article above didn't help, may be a good time to reinstall as Goom pointed out.

It seems like the real problem is the fact I cannot turn on windows update - I cannot get my drivers to run the cd/dvd drive to read the windows installation disk

Windows Update won't work until you get it back to Genuine status. Follow the activation process and/or look at that link I posted for ideas on how to get it activated.

I think you may HAVE to reload.

I downloaded MGADiag.exe today from MS and ran it and it confirmed I was Genuine - here are the first few log lines below. Then I rebooted - but my other problems still persist:
1. DVD-CDRW is disabled in the device mgr - so I my DVD reader not recognized and I cannot read a disk. This is a Lenovo T61 w 4GB.

2. Outlook 2007 graphics do not download

3. Windows update is not working so I cannot download any updates to get the DVD disabled driver fixed by a download from MS - the error is ------
Windows could not start the Windows Update service on Local Computer. Error 1079: The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process.-----
So my question is: how do I figure out what the other "account specified for other services running in the same process" is? I am hoping that by getting WU to work I can get my DVD to work. THen Outlook remains.

I figured out that the "local System Account" has tobechecked in the service Windows Update properties > Logon - after that I was able to click start and the service indicated it was running. To confirm this I went to Task Manager>Services tab and verified that the service wuauserv is running. Then when I go to Control Panel >All Panel Updates> and click Windows Update Iget the error message "windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart you computer.

HUH???????

And just as I typed this I get a popup - that my computer may not be running Genuine Windows!!!!!!!!!!!

HUH???????

I have run out of ideas/options. I went to the local mall where there is a Microsoft Store (coincidentally right next to the Apple Store) and had their local guru look at my Genuine Windows problem. He tried everything i tried and ran analysis with his software tools but came to the conclusion the HDD needs to be wiped and reloaded and everything else has to be reloaded. He could not get windows update to run either.

Well look on the bright side... At least you get a fresh install out of the deal.
