The previous system shutdown at 05:03:10 on 22/06/2007 was unexpected.

Every 2 weeks my windows 2000 server shuts down and I can see no reason for it. What is more of a pain is that it holds ISA2004 so we get no email no internet.........

Has anyone got any ideas on why this could be happening?

Gary

Ah.. I have seen this plenty of times (unfortunately). Usually these reboots are NOT caused by the OS but by an underlying hardware problem (Power Supply, PCI Bus error, CPU).

Take a look at the hardware logs through the BIOS/Setup (or if you have a service processor like RILOE/RSA available, logon and check for events that may have led to the reboot)

Hope this helps.

It doesnt reboot it just switches off, every 2 weeks early Friday morning!

It is as if there is a scheduled task to switch off, any ideas what it could be?

As the system switches off but the OS says it was unexpected it's very unlikely to be a scheduled task, as itsp1965 says it sounds like a hardware issue.

Do you have the system on a UPS?

I found that upgrading the BIOS on my server seemed to stop the problem. Out of 26 servers this has happened on 3 but another one has gone the last week or so.

If it happens at the same time every 2 weeks, may be worth watching the console as it happens - even if it means an early morning:-(

Could it be a faulty UPS doing a self test - this disconnects the load?

On some servers, you can set the BIOS so after power loss / return, the server is set to "always on" or "last state" so it reboots itself instead of switching off.

It was the UPS causing the problem, the UPS was replaced and now the problem has gone!
