The NTVDM has encountered an illegal instruction

Hi there

Every time i boot my PC i'm faced with a Dos window with an error message.

I just click ignore and the error message vanished but i feel its affecting the performance of my PC.

My PC which is connected to my works domain runs windows XP and is only about 6 months old!

The MS - DOS window opens and the error prompt displays the following error message

16 bit MS - DOS Subsystem
C:\windows\system32\scchk32.exe
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction
CS:06d7 IP: 23ae OP:ff ff ff ff od
choose close to terminate the program

can anyone shed any light as my PC seems to be running painfully slow right now.

it tells you exactly what ntvdm is for and gives you some options to scan and repair the file.

Head over to

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

and run a complete scan of your system. This sounds like malware...
