In my opinion, one of the next big thing will come along with the soon to be seen release of the ultra-thin screen display, the one that look like a transparent plastic film. I've seen a demo recently, and I found this stuff really amazing.

The use of such a product would dramatically change our way of life and would bring plenty of new financial opportunities. I explain:

First of all, this product would be used as a "skin" wrapped on clothes and accessories and I guess that further researches would allow wrapped cloths to look like the synthetic ones we use nowadays. So, imagine people wearing clothes that have graphics which suddenly become animated when they were static a second before. People would be able to download new animations for their clothes/accessories via the internet and would eventually pay specialists to create their own personal 2D/3D/video animations the same way tatoo makers do nowadays. Imagine the impact of the explosion of visual effects in your daily life. I see this become a craze in the future. Also, part from clothes and accessories, this craze could be extended to the packaging industry and to the advertising industry. Why not having a video animation start on soap box or an animated logo of your company sticked on your cars?

This would mean plenty of work for the animation/video makers, the designers in general and for the advertisers as well.

Remember this post, because it will happen! :)

...I don't know if I'd like that, personally... think of the problems this could cause when you're driving... you see the animation and get distracted; the next thing you know you're wrapped around a tree.

People who get motion-sick easily would be afraid to leave their homes; people with epilepsy would probably just die from overload...

Besides, advertising (your soap-box example) is already annoying enough; I don't want to watch a commercial on the box while I'm doing the dishes...

Don't get me wrong, the ultra-thin screen sounds cool; I just hope it's not going to be used like that.

humans driving cars is a liability anyway ... in america at least they're really trying hard to get cars to drive themselves (according to all the stuff i read, i'm in england btw.).

in england, safeway (i think) have started using floating hub-caps on their lorries with jokes on them ... they don't spin ... you read the joke on the back hub cap, and the answer on the front for when you're overtaking them ...

plastic screens will probably end up on t-shirts and clothing though ... you already get pictures on t-shirts to shock (nude breasts for women, dying animals for animal rights groups, FCUK slogans ...) it'd take it to a whole new dimension if you could put a shocking, repeating movie on it.

or if you have a link to a network (mobile phone, wireless, etc) you could even get it to display another part of the world on your chest real time.

you could get some real looks with that kind of display.

I don't think it will happen somehow ;)

The cost would be rediculous compared to normal clothes, and more importantly how the hell would you wash them.

Looks like it's happening already, not seen pictures, but I did read a short write up in a fashion mag just the other day. Of course, that's not to say it'll actually catch on.

To benlinkknilneb:

You sound like the detractors of the train the first time it started. Several scientists said that people would die from the sickness that would result from the view of the fast moving landscape. Also, I would like to point out that such screens would not necessarily display blinking animations. Creativity allows to display any kind of interesting slow paced animations. For example, you could imagine normal color patterns sliding in a subtile manner from the top to the bottom of you pants. Nothing too flashy.
I see it just as a a way to animate clothes as we know them at present time. Not necessarily a way to bother people to death with annoying commercials. Au usual, everything depend on the use made of technology, and not the technology itself.

To Grenage:

Don't you know how fashion works? Something look ridiculous at first sight. Some cool people wear those stuff and then, it become the coolest thing on earth.
Also, when you see the way such screens are made, you will understand that they will be washable in a near future. They already work on the "water problem".

I see walking billboards once the marketing companies get a hold of them.

Though playing x-box on someone ones back would be interesting.

If at first you do not succeed, cheat!

I do understand the way it works, but not to that extent. We've all seen rediculous fashion shows where the designs are completely retarded and impractical, how often has you seen people walking down the street with those on :)

Also there is the power issue. Are we all to carry around hulking 24V's built into our shoes? :)

You wouldnt be able to get on a plane with those babies.

OK, so no-one wears the extreme catwalk creations, but this is where the trend starts & it's then toned down somewhat before it hits the highstreet. The version hitting the catwalks will no doubt be some ridiculous attempt to shock, models wrapped head to toe in x-rated video or suchlike. As Sleidia says we'll probably see something a little more tasteful on the highstreet.
