Interesting that I haven't seen or heard very much about this, happened to be cruising Gibson Research's page and noticed this topic concerning the class action against Netscape/AOL concerning the SmartDownload "feature" that reported the users downloads information back to the company. Thoughts?

(second set of articles, has links to zdnet and wired as well as an interesting court document from this past october)

Boy, you got a big response here Tarwn! :)

I think they deserve a severe kick in the ass for that! It's a serious breech of privacy afaik!

As punishment they should be made to delete all their Version 4+ browsers! That'll teach them a lesson! LOL

Speaking of Netscape 4+ I got an email yesterday saying my site was "informative yet ironic" because it doesn't work in Netscape 4.75! Get a real browser buddy!

Gibson has been fighting this good fight for the last two years. And Netscape isn't the only one doing it.

Go to and download AdAware. (Gibson wrote the original program.)

Install AdAware and run it every time you install anything on your computer. ______________________________________________________________________

Go farther than that, run AdAware weekly also to catch stuff you get from browsing. Another good program to look into is Sunbelt Software's Pest Patrol. There's a identify-only eval and a reasonably priced full program:
