I have a 80GB external hard disk, connected to PC by USB port. I format it by WinXP disk management, I do 3 partitions and format them, but I didn't give drive letters to the 3 partions, their volume label are all New Volum, the default setting. Then I cannot find the 3 partitions in Windows Explore. Until I give them the drive letters, then I can find them in Window Explore.

SO it means, to be recoginzed by PC, I must give drivers to all the partitons on the hard disk. Is that true? If only one partion, then it doesn't matter I assign driver letter or not? Also for 3 partitonos, can their volum lable be same? Does it matter?

Why I didn't give them driver letters at the beginning, because Mac computer will also use this external hard disk, so I think not to give the driver letters cos this is for Windows system, mayeb Mac will not recognized. But seems I am wrong. In fact, Mac can recognized the 3 partition even I assign the dvier letters.

I am not clear of the purpose of driver letters, volum lable , are they necessary? and what they will affect if using in Mac system?
