The issue withdelimitters

Does anyone have a quick and dirty script to count the number of delimitters say | in a file. I am new to this and in dire straits.

The number of delimitters in a file. It is a huge file and | are being used as delimitters.

tr -d -c '|' </path/to/input | wc -c
