I have a western digital hd, 7200rpm, 160gb, on a pentium 4 computer. The regular speed of the hd is 50mb/sec
Almost every morning when i turn the computer on the speed of the hd is 4mb/sec.
I use restore point to restore the computer to the day before and the speed is immidiatly back at 50mb/sec.

What is happening? Why is the hd speed dropping by 10 times?

Anyone have any ideas...

Thanks in advance !!

1) Check for viruses.
2) Check for spyware
3) remove files/programs you don't need/use
4)delete all tmp, bak and log files that you don't need
5) Run Chkdsk c: /f from the command prompt , press
the "Y" key, reboot
6) defrag your hard drive.

the above should be a big help. Do them on a regular basis.

I have norton system works 2005 and its doing all these on a regular basis. I checked my disk and no erors.

Nothing helps...

the funny thing is that its happening so quickly, i mean when i turn my pc off its 50mb/sec and in the morning its 4mb/sec. Then i use windows restore point its back immidiatly...

What else should I try??

Disable Norton 2005 at night, and give it a try the next morning. Also, anti-virus scan has nothing to do with a spyware scan.

my computer is off for the night. I think problem is solved...

This is what was happening:
I installed an hd benchmark program to test the hd and write the speeed. to make the results accurate it changed the controller options from Ultra DMA 5 to PIO to have more priority on the benchmarking than on other things or somthing like that. It did not change it back.

So i had to use retore point to change it everytime and i was dumb enough to chek the speed with the benchmark program after the restores.....

Never use a HD benchmarker....

Or, test and remember <slaps forehead with palm of hand> to change it back! [grin]
