I have a .fla, I don't know what version of Flash it was created in except that it was made about a year ago. When I open it in flash mx and preview it by dragging through the timeline, it is different from what what I see when I publish the file. For example the text that should be fading out, is not fading in the .swf. When I look at it in Flash it does. I am really stumped. I have only worked with a couple of very basic Flash files so am new to this.
I don't have all the fonts that are used in the .fla file so am using the defaults that Flash offered me. Could that be my problem?

file>publish settings>flash will show what version of flash it was created in.

the fade effect may not taking place over enough frames for you to notice it in the swf. hard to tell.

why not post the fla with a description of what it ought to be doing and i will take a look

The text problem is probably down to not having the fonts embedded in the movie - if you're using system default fonts for display they may behave as you expect in the preview but not when published as the player won't have access to the font outlines in order to embed them.

Change the fonts over to ones you have installed on your machine, embed them (it's an option in the text properties inspector) and they should fade etc. in the final published movie.

thanks wangbar!
as I posted this question I wondered if that might be it so I went and tried it out. Bingo! Thanks for the help.

thanks billwatson for the tip on finding which version the file was originally created in. So when you initially open file>publish settings>flash the version that is shown is the version it was created in, as well as a setting for which player version you want it published for?
