I am able to open all MS Office files, but when trying to save them, I receive the message listed above in the subject. I am have several folder/files within mydocument that have a "box" as the file name. I am unable to delete these. This is an external K drive that I have. Attached is what the folder/files look like within the mydocuments folder.

Any ideas?

Regards,
David

Never save a file directly to removeable media. I would take all of the "good" files off that drive and reformat it.

You should be saving to your hard drive, then copy them over to the external drive.

JPaules: I'm new, but I always learn something here. I've never had any trouble saving to an external Zip drive, and I was wondering why it's a bad idea. Thanks for your time.

It is just generally a good idea to have removeable storage media keep copies. For exactly the reason you have. While hard drives can also get corrupted, the basic reason for removeable storage is to hold (hopefully) good copies, not originals.

When you save a file, temp files are created. If the two versions of the document (the temp and original), any temp files that are created in the source folder, and or backup copies of the document, are too large for the floppy then various issues are encountered. Usually the file ends up corrupted. That's not to say that it will always happen, but it can. And Murphy's Law says it's going to happen at the most inopportune moment.

In addition, not all programs support working across a network or removable media. Rather than risk losing files, get into the habit of saving locally first then use Windows Explorer to copy your files over.
