Hi gurus

I really need help, on the following, I have this computer that I am trying to fix, The computer on safe mode runs perfect but when boot it on regular win xp, it shuts down after a while, so I am not a computer savvy but here is what I did

1) I reboot computer on safe mode and restored system to like a month ago(this did not fix the problem
2) I ran AV on safe mode( nothing came out) everything clean
3) I go ahead a run as per a few advice a repair installation but here is where all my problem comes

On (3) I have the original cd that came with the computer but half way repairing the machine the following error occured
The file "rdpdr.dll" on windows driver cabinet is needed and ask me to go and find it on c:\I386 but no way I can find it, then I point the browser to the CD and guess what it cant find it, like this error I have like three or four "storprop.sys" and others

where do I find this once the installation aske me for it, I thought they would have been on the CD at least.

Thanks a bunch for your help on this matter

What type of CD are you attempting the Repair install from? Is it a Retail or OEM Recovery CD. I'm guessing that the CD may be scratched or otherwise damaged?

If it was a Retail version then you could borrow a similar edition (Service Pack, Home Pro etc.) from somewhere and use that but when requested insert your own Product Key not the borrowed one.

On the other hand storprop.sys might be an indication of a faulty CD or DVD Drive, in which case you will have to fix the problem drive. You can pick up a cheap CD-ROM drive from any repairer.

You can look at these suggestion about repairing XP with no CD Drive.

I had a similar problem with a Dell running XP MC. The client had a legit recovery disc but it could not complete a repair install (different error message though). Trying to order a new recovery disc from Dell was a total nightmare. I gave up & got the client's OK to do a clean install. The DVD could not find the disk then. Check on another PC displayed all files. I had another DVD drive, slaved it & all went well with the install. Later conversation with client revealed it was a sporadic problem with that drive, sometimes it would play the disc & sometimes not. So as linney said, look into replacing the drive; if you have a spare one lying around, slave it like I did & see if repair install completes. Also, if it was a faulty drive, you may want to back up all critcal files before doing a repair install. It normally doesn't affect your program files but I've had cases were some files were lost/damaged.

I'm assuming you're trying to do a repair install & not trying to fix the problem using Recovery Console. If Memory serves me right, rpddr.dll was used in Widows Server, but then, I've been wrong before. Here's a site describing it:

If all else fails, you may want to visit M$ web site; you'll probably be able to download that dll to your Desktop. Browse & point it to there when it asks where to find it.
