The difference between HD and big frames?

Please forgive me if this is just a dumb question. I've heard lots of stuff about how Premiere can't edit hi-def, or that it can, but only the most recent version.

But wait -- even when I was using 5.1c, I was able to set up a project that had 1920 x 1080 pixels at 29.97 or any frame rate I wanted, really.

So, what's the difference between doing that and editing high-definition?

Does this mean I can use my older versions of premiere to edit HD, provided I have the necessary truckloads of hard drive space?

Cheers,
