NetWare is dead" The industry has been saying this for 15 years. But everybody thought it was Microsoft that would kill NetWare off. Wrong. Novell is doing it. Novell is killing the NetWare kernel for good with Open Enterprise Server 2.

Before panic sets in and everybody jumps out the 15th floor window -- it's going to be okay. It's not a bad thing. OES 2 will still do everything NetWare is doing for you now, but does it on a Linux kernel instead. It's actually really cool how they are going to do it. Check this link out:

While the first release of Novell Open Enterprise Server moved a majority of NetWare services to Linux, Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 completes the transition of NetWare services to Linux. Some of the key components include directory-enabled DNS/DHCP, and DFS junction support. With this release, you have the ability to transition existing DNS and DHCP infrastructures from NetWare to Linux, as well as centrally administer them the same way they are administered on NetWare.

Like you couldn't before?
Color me unimpressed. I have yet to find it a problem to configure DNS and DHCP on any platform. Are they keeping the special DHCP options for SLP?

Too much corporate hype. I wonder if I've got any hardware I can run VMS on.
