the comand "promt"

hi guys ...

i will be pleased if anybody explains the promt command that is used in config mode ... cause i really don't know what is it's benifits ... but it seems to me like it does the same thing that hostname command does ...

No, it isnt quite the same.....

Setting the hostname sets the actual name of the router, which shows up in the prompt.

You can change the prompt and its variables to show something else...

For example, cisco's default prompt is hostname#

So whatever you set up as the hostname will show up with a # sign thereafter, or a > sign depending on what access-level you are at.

I think this goes back to the fact that the IOS is kind of a Unix clone, but it looks like the functionality is taken away from it.
