Hi,

I've learnt the hard way that if you have a singles website that has multiple domains pointing to it, Google can index the pages in a fractured manner.

So if I had a site of 10 pages, I might have 5 of the pages indexed for mydomain.com and 5 of the pages for mydomain.co.uk

you don't get 10 pages for .com and 10 for .co.uk

So obviously, I'd like to just have say the .co.uk indexed and the .com simply redirects rather than as if they are 2 different wesites.

So how do I do this? How do I tell google which site to index and that the other is just an 'alias' so don't index it.

I take it I am right in the way I have observerd google's indexing behaviour?

Also I used to have two different domains pointing to one website, this also had an indexing conflict where some pages were under one domain and othera were under the other domain but never2 pages the same for both domains.

How do I get rid off the old domain from googles index so I can get the pages indexed under the domain I want to keep.

I did the URL removal, deleted the site map, stopped the server from accepting the domain name for hosting.

but google still have pages indexed, I can't issue another removal, as obviously i can't verify the domain is mine as it no longer is hosted anywhere , so what do I do?

Thanks, 1DMF

Thanks Chris, though i'm a little confused, I read the thread and it said DNS is the best.

Well I have my DNS pointing to the server for both and I have set up the IIS to have both domains for the header (i.e. alias).

But google has 16 pages for .com and 22 pages for .co.uk , it still is indexing part of the site for .com.

I guess i'll just issue another URL site removal and see if I can get rid of the half indexed site.

You've misread something somewhere in there, Using DNS to point hostnames without redirecting is why your site has the problems.

Simply aliasing (pointing) a hostname to another will return a 200 response for both.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

yup, I then noticed on the next page, someone quanified how to do it if you have access to IIS (which I do!)

So I now have deleted the header for .co.uk , created its own website and then chose the URL redirect option to the .com.

it's a bit of a pain you have to go through the IIS process of supplying a phsical disk folder becore you can then change to redirect, seems a bit odd the wizard doesn't allow that selection from the off, oh well it's all sorted now.

I've done a site removal request for .co.uk and recreated the sitemap for .com and set up a new webmaster tool account, hopefully in a couple of weeks everything will settle down to how I want it.

Thanks again for the link.

There are far easier ways especially when you have access to the IIS MMC

Create TWO sites,

set the host header on one site to be the primary and only the primary.

On the other site, set the host headers of ALL the other hostnames including the non- then redirect that one to the primary with a permanent redirect.

I've managed to use ASP to force 404 header, I'll wait for google to remove and will then do the redirect.

that should make sure.

nope all done , site removed, re-direct set up , less than 24hours, not bad eh!
