hi everyone,

We have a mix of SQL Server 2000 and 2005 and Oracle 10g databases.

We want to find a good, easy-to-use tool our business users can use for querying database tables and views.

This would not be something that IT people would use very much - we have other tools.

I'm curious to hear what purchased (or freebie) query tools other companies are using.

Thanks for any feedback. John

OK I've looked at Quests's "Toad for Data Analysis" and also "Advanced Query Tool".

Toad for Data Analysis definitely has a lot of features and seems to be fairly easy to use. I built a simple query and exported the results to Excel.

That's basically what our end users need - a query tool that allows for saving/exporting results to Excel and possibly PDF.

But on the downside, Toad enables the user to creates tables, even databases. I assume that if the user's SQL Server/Oracle login does not have those permissions, they wouldn't be able to create those objects.

I'll continue to look for something a bit less expensive that is geared more for the business user who is not an IT employee.

Thanks, John

do your users need to actually write the SQL?

If not, perhaps SQL 2005's Report Builder would be a good option?

Hope this helps,

Alex

Now you can go where the people are one!
Now you can go where they get things done!

i've used WinSQL a lot. It works very well and its free. It will also work with all the major databases from AS400 to SQL Server.

I'm also looking for something my users call "query by example"
I need something like Access but they CAN NOT change the data, nor create tables.
We took Access away from them before I started here because it was a load on the database.
Only 3 or so people will be doing this.

Any ideas?
