the attempt to configure the machine account on server failed

trying to demote a DC using DCPromo...enter in the credentials and it goes about it's business, but then it keeps failing with this error message...

&quot;The attempt to configure the machine account <local_server_name$> on server <next_closest_DC> failed&quot;

and to enter in an enterprise admin account which I've already supplied.

In the \sysroot\debug\dcpromo.log file it says the same thing and the following

Ntdsdemote returned 5
Dsrolepdemoteds returned 5
Failed to demote the directory service (5)

Help...TIA
