Just a note to say thank you to this forum and those contributors who helped me get my server up and operating. A quick recap:
1. Bought software and under powered box, had IT friend load SBS/Exhange 2008 but couldn't make email work
2. Began self awareness journey with many silly and basic questions after reading "Unleashed" and every post on this forum
3. After trying to fix essentially a broken set up over the course of a month, I learned a lot, and got the modem and router set up correctly, and learned how to manipulate the ports etc.
4. Built a new server box out of workstation materials, and finally took the plunge and loaded SBS/Exhange on the new box and I've got email and rww up and running, hooray!

Although several responded to some of my questions, Mark was particularly helpful, and even back channeled me with additional info, and the patience of JOB.

I know I'll have issues as they come up, some already cropping up, and you'll be hearing from me again.

Thanks to all,

Scott

Scott, glad to hear that you got the help you needed on this forum. Hopefully I was indirectly helpful, as I wrote the chapters on Exchange in the SBS 2008 Unleashed book.

You are right. Mark does have the patience of JOB. Kudos to him!

Dave:

I think I need to go back now, 2 months after finishing Unleashed, and peruse the chapters, and I'm sure I'll find answers to a lot of new questions. I am determined to master SBS/Exchange to get out of it everything it can do to make my life easier in communication over the net.

I've really wanted to pull the trigger on your Train Signal training course but alas and alack, the budget during these austere times won't allow it. I'm sure it's worth every penny. Hopefully things will pick up.

Thank you for your participation in the forum, I know everyone, that has been on here, appreciates it, although they don't always express it.

Scott

Happy to have helped. Just came online to update my SBS 2008 FAQ, so be sure to check it out.

I hope that helps.

Mark

Hi Mark:

Believe me I will. Looking at a complete new install on SBS/Exchange if I can't get the console to run.

Keep you posted,

Scott

FYI, just had a customer with emails not getting delivered, I discovered the Microsoft Exchange Transport Service was failing due to insufficient disk space on the C drive. Just updated my FAQ with the PowerShell command to move that Queue to another drive. I recommend doing that on all servers.

I hope that helps.

Mark

Hi Mark:

Thanks for that. I'm noticing that happening more and more and although there is tons of space on my C drive, log files might be filling it up, I'll have to check it. There is well over 1TB on my E drive. I'll move it.

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Mark:

Well, I used Exchange Management Shell to execute those two commands (move queue and increase sizes of send/receive email. Now my transport service has failed and my Pop3 connector has failed and my email is down. I guess I just don't have enough experience to undertake these kinds of commands without doing the things necessary that are probably understood but not stated.

I'm going to try and get it back to where it was by putting it back to where it was...

Hi Mark:

I tried returning my Server to last known good configuration but it didn't work and I am totally down. I can't believe I did this with one command. The MS Exchange Transport will not restart, when I try to restart it I get the error 1068 "Dependency service or group failed to start". How can I get back to working email?

Help! Scott

Make sure the destination folder exists and assign full control NTFS rights to System, Network Service and Administrators.

If it still fails to work, rerun the command and point it back to the original location. There is an alternate way to move it. you can try following this technet article.
I hope that helps.

Mark

Hi Mark:

OK, got up early this morning, calmed down and renamed the new Edge Transport exe config file to old and resurrected the original config file which was saved as old and restarted the transport service and I'm back.

I have 72GB on my C:\ partition and I only had about 3 GB of log files so I don't think my outgoing email problem is lack of space on C: drive.

I am still getting the same error I had from the beginning of this implimentation with my Go Daddy Cert where the autodiscover.domain.com states the certificate doesn't match the name of the site, and it must have something to do with the internal domain and external domain having different names. I will call Go Daddy tonight to see if they can help me sort it. I had a similar prob getting my smart phone (Nokia e-63, I hate Blackberries)to work with activesync, until I input the internal domain name then it kicked in.

Thanks,

Scott

Sounds like your cert wasn't setup properly from the request part.

You can go on the GoDaddy site and revoke the cert yourself then re-request it.

From the SBS server, go into the SBS COnsole and run the Remove Public Certificate wizard from the Connectivity tab.

Then go into IIS, highlight the Server name and look for the icon for Server Certificates. Run the wizard again to create the request text file. In ALL places you are asked for the name, use the public address. Once the text file is created, copy the contents to your clipboard and return to GoDaddy. Click on Manage Certificate and request the certificate. You can then paste in the contents of your request and in a minute or so can download the new certificate. The GoDaddy cert will have two files in a zip file. Extract the files to a folder on the server. Run the add public certificate wizard from the connectivity tab. Browse to the extracted files, choose to view all files and pick the file with your public name in it. You should be all fixed up then.

I hope that helps.

Mark

I'm sure you're right, I don't think the cert is setup right. The unfortunate thing is no one seems to know when you call Go Daddy. The most recent thing I tried was a recommendation from another IT person on here to install the 2nd extracted file, and the procedure was specified on a Go Daddy help file. I followed the directions and installed that secondary file but it made no difference.

I suspect this certificate issue is the reason I am getting so many Exchange warnings of my emails not being delivered and being refused by other domains.

Question:

In your instructions, you specify doing the following, but with no action after it, did you leave that out? "Then go into IIS, highlight the Server name and look for the icon for Server Certificates."

Last question, you say wherever "In ALL places you are asked for the name, use the public address"; do you mean use the external mail domain as opposed to the internal domain name? Because they are different in my setup. When I get the warning, which is: "The name on the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name of the site" I assume it is looking for the name of my internal domain, because at the top of the warning, it has autodiscover.externaldomain.com, so it has my external domain or public domain. When I was setting up my Nokia for activesync, it would not work when I input my external domain, but when I punched in the internal domain name then it started working and processing email. Help!

Thanks,

Scott

Sorry, in Server certificates you want to request the new certificate. I don't have access to a 2008 SBS at the moment for the exact click through steps but it is not hidden in there.

Regarding the name, yes, use the external name everywhere. Remember that the cert is for outside use. You will get a cert error if you use OWA internally, but that is not a big deal. You want your external access to be working. Internally the cert normally isn't used with the exception of OWA.

I hope that helps.

Regards,

Mark
