In Photoshop CS, I’m not able to apply texture, from the filter menu, to a colored background. The background is selected by the Marquee Tool, yet the Texture section from the Filter Menu remains grayed out. I remember in past versions of Photoshop this being an easy process. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

A few things to check: Make sure you have the coloured layer selected in the layer palette.

Make sure there isn't a padlock by the side of the layer name in the layer palette. If there is, select that layer and click on the padlock icon at the top of the palette to unlock.

I'm assuming all of the filters are greyed out, or is it just 'texture'?

Thank Dweezel,
Yes, the colored layer is selected in the layer palette.

There is not a padlock by the side of the layer name in the layer palette.

And no, all the filters are not greyed, only "texture," plus "Filter Gallery," "Artistic," "Brush Strokes," "Sketch," and "Video" are greyed out.

The background color I am attempting to texturize is a solid color selected from the "Color Palette" and "Paint Bucket"ed into the "Marquee" selection.

What am I doing wrong?

Are you in RGB mode Tracks. I think some of the filters are disabled if you're not. Go to Image > Mode and see which one is ticked.

Thanks Dweezel,
I was in CMYK mode, putting the image in RGB made the difference!
