text wrap effect?

Hi
is there a way to have text fill a shape or an object in AI9 so that the fonts are distorted to the outline of the object ( as opposed to the newline-type fill achieved using the "area type" tool)? Sort of like the effect of wrapping text on an object in Adobe Dimensions.
