Text will not highlight in illustrator cs

I try to highlight text in illy cs but it wont, what the heck? is there a setting I need to change??

Sounds like you have your edges hidden.

Apple+H or I think its Ctrl+H on PC

Or you can choose from the menus

View>Show Edges

If the file was sent to you is it possible that the text was converted to outlines?
