Text tool is slow to respond in Illy CS

I find that once I have a reasonable (1000-2000 words) amount of text in a document, the type tool tends to respond very slowly.

For example inserting spaces take 3-4 seconds to respond. There is nothing else in my document, so I don't know why this is happening.

Any responses to this problem would be greatly appreciated, as this is absolutely driving me crazy!
