Good morning!

i did search and found an old entry that got no response, so i'm going to ask again.

Is it possible to change the angle or orientation of the text in a column, or more specifically a column header? This is possible in Excel and is referred to as the Text Orientation and is set according to degrees of an angle.

I have a requirement to recreate a report (that is really a form) in Cognos and this is a requirement from the requestor to allow for more columns on a page.

Thanks in advance!

Becky,
Not in Impromptu (7.4); you don't mention what application you're using. I have to use a macro to output a report to Excel and then 'work it over' to achieve such formatting.

oh, i'm sorry, i'm using Cognos Report Studio 1.1

we are trying to keep our end users from having to manipulate reports and forms themselves in order to be able to use them, so having them export to Excel to accomplish this really isn't an option in this case.

Hi Becky

The simple answer to your question is yes - I've seen it done in CRN 1.1 on text items and it is just a simple property setting. Problem is I can't remember where and I can't check as I'm using Cognos 8. I would be surprised if it is not possible to change the orientation in column headers, it would have to be a pretty common requirement.

I want to exactly the same thing in 8 and I can't find the setting - or perhaps I'm just starting to lose it...

Anybody out like to help the elderly.

Tom

Thanks Tom,

i too thought i had found it once before as a property when i was looking for something else. when i couldn't find it last week, i assumed that i had just confused it with what i knew of Excel. glad to hear that someone else has seen it as well :)

If you do find it in 8 would you go ahead and post back with it's location? Hopefully if it's possible in 1.1 it will be found similarly.

I really appreciate the help

Becky,

I've sent an email to an old colleague of mine who had to do this in a report, if I get a reply I'll post it. I've had a good rummage 'round and there's nothing that looks like it would do the trick, so I'm assuming it's well hidden or no longer exists in C8.

Tom

thanks for your effort, i'll hope to hear back from you!

meanwhile, i'll post back as well if i come across the answer myself.

Of course that's not to say someone else with the solution isn't welcomed to participate!

Becky,

“To rotate text 90 degrees

>> Text Flow & Justification
>> Writing Mode - 'Top to bottom, right to left'

Unfortunately the only option currently available in ReportNet 1.1 MR2, and it’s therefore NOT possible to orient the text so that it goes from 'Bottom to top, left to right'. This is why I ended up using the manipulated image/jpeg I had created in PhotoShop. Apparently Cognos are aware of this but they haven't yet done anything about it. Not sure if it now possible in Cognos 8.”

I saw a forum post the other day suggesting that it may be possible to achieve the 'Bottom to top, left to right' functionality using style sheets. Haven’t yet tried to see if it works but the CSS code was:

.txtornt {
PADDING-RIGHT: 0px;
PADDING-LEFT: 0px;
PADDING-BOTTOM: 2px;
PADDING-TOP: 2px;
height: 40px;
WHITE-SPACE: nowrap;
filter: flipH() flipV();
LINE-HEIGHT: 40px;
WRITING-MODE: tb-rl;
} “

I looked at this setting and it did not jump out at me as ‘Rotate text 90 anti-clockwise’ From the forum post it appears that rotating text through 90 degree increments should be straight forward – all we need now is for Cognos to add the options or better still look at the Excel text formatting interface and plagarise!

I'm trying to rotate the x-axis in my line chart. I have clicked on all portions of my chart and cannot find the property to set this. It seems like the problem you're already discussing, just in another portion of the report.

Thought I'd post my response to my own question in case anyone ever needs the answer on how to rotate the axis labels:

Click on the chart, click onto the label(s)
Under Properties, Under General, click on Label Control
Change Label Control from Default to Automatic
Next, change the stagger property to no then allow 45 degree rotation by changing to Yes.
