A printer has asked me to edit the text of a job.
The original creator used Illi and after supplying .eps files, which I could not edit, supplied Illi files (yes I know ther'e practially the same).

When I open the files, in AI10, I find the text is broken into small cunks; i.e., a word may have one or two or three characters connected together when selected with direct selection tool, same if trying to do a "text" selection.

Any ideas as to how to reassemble the text into an editable paragraph?

P.S. Creator has been banned by client.

It sounds like the original person converted the text to outlines, which are not editable as text. Are they coming up with with the blue outlines when selected? If so, that's outlines.

If by "Illi" you're referring to version 11, and the text is actually text instead of outlines, you could be having compatability problems. Ask the original person to Export to Illustrator Legacy - compatable with your version or version 9.

Thanks for the reply. i thought exporting to a legacy version changed the text to "point text". Maybe I misread the description but I thought point text was not editable in the sence of editing in a "word processor"?

Sorry, I'm very new to Illustrator (Illi) and only use it for correcting creators goofs.

No -exporting to Illustrator legacy just make things, including text, more compatable with the older versions. That's why AI offers so many variations in Legacy window - compatable with AI10, 9, 8 etc.

Exporting as a legacy eps will screw up text, but legacy AI is just fine.

lissa:

To get the text to be reunited, simply select all the text in one block, cut (ctrl-c), then drag a rectangle with the type tool to about the right size (just click and drag), and paste (ctrl-v), the text will now appear as one long paragraph, but it will all be connected again so you can format it as usual. it is now area type as opposed to point type, so it will adapt to the size of the container. To change the size of the container, simply use the direct-select tool to drag the sides (white arrow without + sign).

Thanks Bert! That's been driving me crazy for awhile too. It sucks to have to reposition everything, but at least all the text is connected! Cool [2thumbsup]

...and all that without using the Appearance Palette (I have been accused of using the AP for everything including brushing my teeth...).

Glad to help.
