I came across an abbreviation today that for the life of me, I can't figure out what it is supposed to mean. I was hoping some of you might could help me out, and also thought this might make for a good discussion.

The one I'm thinking about right now is "DC." It is not talking about Washington, DC, either.

In context, I've seen it on a couple of different forum boards or review bulletins, talking about restaurants.

The context has been each time, something like "My DC and I went to this new restaurant..."

Does anybody have a clue as to what that stands for?? Also, does anybody else want to mention any on here they find rather odd, misleading, or just hard to follow?

DC is probably Dear Child. Just as DH = Dear Husband, DS = Dear Spouse (or Dear Son), DD = Dear Daughter.

Or maybe the C is something else. Chum? Companion? Colleague?

It's better to have loved and lost than live with the idiot for the rest of your life.

Hmmmm....

Distracting Chatterbox?
Dastardly Cohort?
Devilish Companion?
Delightful Companion?

Distant Cousin? If in Tennessee that is. With immediate apologies to any Tenesseean denizens of these threads!

I want to be good, is that not enough?

Distant Cousin - that is something that actually did cross my mind when trying to think, "what in the world is this person saying?" [smile]

Here are the full contextual quotes where I first noticed this:
From
My DC and I opted out of entrees this trip b/c we really went to check out the sushi. We've been

to a handful of sushi places in Greenville after hearing rave reviews from friends/etc and have

been severely disappointed. We moved here in September and prior to that we were eating sushi

about once a week in Boston at some really, really great places. I'm SO happy to have found Blue

Fire to fill that void.

From
What great fun. My DC lives in NYC and was excited about getting some good Mexican food.
...
The cart served coffee and sold stuffed balls of dough rolled in sugar. They had raspberry,

nutella, and custard filled options and we chose custard. WOW. My DC and I ate it and giggled as

if we were kids in a candy store.
...
My DC ate at Chez Panisse earlier in the week and felt that Range was superior.

Well there are others, but I'm afraid that if I get too far out of context, it could mean many

other things as well.

I'm sorta thinking that perhaps this one is the real meaning of the abbreviation:
DC is probably Dear Child.

Oh, and BBIAF isn't "Be back in a fortnight" (who the hell uses "fortnight" any more?) it's "Be Back In A Flash".

You know, I've been on the 'net since 1986, and spent what amounts to YEARS in chat rooms, and have never seen 90% of these....

I'm going to use the DC thing next time I take my wife out. Then in conversation, I'll say something like, "yes, my DC and I just LOVE the crab cakes at that place!" [wink] I'm sure she'd love being referenced as "my DC."

No, no, you don't refer to your wife as DC. It is all wrong. An appropriate abbreviation for the wife would be SO - Significant Other :).
