Text layer doesn't emboss or bevel

Normally I can emboss or bevel a text layer just fine, but every once in awhile, the text won't emboss or bevel. Furthermore, after selecting emboss or bevel, moving the sliders affects drop shadowing, not embossing or beveling. The font itself, remains flat looking. It doesn't matter what font I choose.

Is this a bug in PhotoShop 7.0 or am I missing some obscure configuration?

Additional info: I suspect the problem occurs when I copy the style of some other layer and paste the style into the text layer. I just now deleted the text layer and created a new one -- and Bevel & Emboss work.

To reuse a layer style, you're usually best off adding that to your Styles pallette.
