In Access 2000 I am doing the following:

1) Running 3 separate select queries that pull different records from one table.
2) Running a union query to combine the results of #1
3) Running a make table query to transform #2 into a real table, not just a query.

The text fields in the resulting table are all 255 characters in length, even though none of the text fields in the original table are that long.

How can I prevent my make table query from making my text fields so long?

Thanks,
TSR

If you are just selecting records are you sure you need to do 3 queries?

Don't worry about the 255 characters. If it's Jet it doesn't seem to make much difference. For text, space is only allocated for the actual data not the length specified in the schema.

Hi TSR,

In Access 2000, if you go to tools, options, and then the tables/queries tab, there are default field size settings for text and number fields that you can adjust.

All the best, jobo123
